Frequently Asked Questions
Emu oil is a natural by-product made from the refined fat of the emu, scientifically named Dromaius novaehallandiae. a large flightless bird native to Australia.
Emu oil is a bright yellow liquid, rich in antioxidants, vitamin A and polyunsaturated fats. Emu oil contains the essential fatty acids; Linoleic acid (Omega-6), Linolenic acid (Omega-3), Oleic acid (anti-inflammatory), Palmitic acid, and some traces of other fatty acids.
Emu Oil has the highest concentration of Omega 3 found in nature. These fatty acids are essential in our day-to-day lives to ensure that our bodies remain in top working order. The body does not make them itself, so it is important to get these fatty acids from other sources. Emu Oil is an excellent source of these important fatty acids.
The use of Emu oil can be traced back thousands of years. The Australian Aborigines were the first people to discover the great healing properties of Emu Oil, they used Emu oil to protect their skin from the harsh Australian sun, and as a remedy to keep their muscles and joints supple.
This ancient remedy didn't stay a secret long, the early explorers to Australia were introduced to the healing benefits of Emu oil. Western settlers soon began to see the benefits of Emu oil. In the 19th Century, the famous Irish explorer Robert O'Hara Burke tells how he rubbed emu oil into his arms when he was sunburned and as a result found that, not only did it help his sunburn, but his stiff elbow as well.
Emu oil is derived from fat deposits just beneath the skin of the bird. Emus are farmed all over the world primarily for their meat. Once harvested, it is processed, filtered, and refined to various standards to obtain the prized, bright yellow oil.
Emu oil contains omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids. The fatty acid profile in emu oil is nearly identical to our skin cell’s profile. The fatty acids in emu oil (Omega 3 and Omega 6) increase the production of hormone-like substances: eicosanoids in our bodies to help heal skin and reduce inflammation.
Emu oil also contains no phosphorus molecules. Our skin is phospholipid deficient, which means there’s no phosphorus in our skin. It will not let anything containing a phosphorus molecule penetrate through it. Anytime you put anything on your skin that is phospholipid deficient, or has no phosphorus, it penetrates right through.
The quality of emu oil can vary significantly from one producer to the next. Grade A (fully refined), Grade B (once refined), and Grade C (crude). When purchasing Emu oil or Emu oil products to ensure quality avoid anything that's not Grade A. This can also be reflected in the cheap price of low-quality oils.
Emu oil is a natural product and there are few documented side effects. Some people may experience skin irritation when applying emu oil directly to the skin as a topical ointment. To avoid this, a person should apply a small amount of emu oil to a small patch of skin, such as the back of one hand. If an allergic reaction occurs, they should stop using the oil. An important fact to consider is the source of the emu oil.
Emus thrive when they have plenty of room to roam and are able to eat a rich diet, and will be a key factor in a high-quality oil. Low-quality living conditions may result in inferior quality oil. It is best to buy oil from a reputable supplier.
It is recommended that Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should talk to their doctor before using emu oil.
Clinical studies have shown that Emu Oil applied topically has natural anti-inflammatory properties. One of the most impressive studies was one done by Drs Whitehouse and Ghosh in Australia. Each of these clinicians has over 25 years of experience and have published extensively on the evaluation and development of drugs used for arthritis. Over a 14-day period they had 11 participants with chronic pain due to arthritis; joint swelling and bone abrasion applied straight emu oil to joints.
The results were amazing. In 14 days, Emu Oil had eliminated all inflammation caused by arthritis joint swelling and bone abrasion due to lack of cartilage. None of the patients experienced arthritis pain in their joints and bones after 14 days of topical application. Emu Oil did not just mask pain, but reduced the inflammation which lowers the risk of further damage caused by scar tissue formation within the joints. Improved joint mobility can restore normal motion, translating to better performance during activities of daily life.
Pure Emu Oil will last for a few years, however the benefits of the added essential oils may deteriorate within this time. Our products have a shelf life of 12 months. If unopened and stored correctly shelf life will be extended.

Emu Oil is considered hypo-allergenic. Allergic reactions are extremely rare as the fatty acids profile in the oil is similar to our own skin cell profile
