Covid-19: Caring For Dry Hands After Excessive Washing

hello world!

There has been a massive increase in frequent hand washing - as it has now been advised by Health Officials (World Health Organisation) that it is a crucial way to help slow and stop the spread of the Corona Virus.

Washing your hands more than usual and over-washing your hands can cause skin to dry and therefore cause cracks - which are an entry point for bacteria in the skin.

Why is hand washing harsh on the skin?

The outside layer of our skin is built up of wax and out which acts as a "shield" and also maintains the natural moisture in the skin. When washing and scrubbing your hands, this protective outside layer is broken down as it gets rid of the germs and unwanted bacteria.

Not applying a moisturiser after washing your hands can lead to dryness, redness, itching, flaking, discomfort and sometimes even cracks in the skin. People with pre-existing dermatologic conditions like Eczema or Psoriasis on the hands and body can therefore experience worsening symptoms from frequent hand washing.

How can I avoid dry hands after washing them?

For starters, use fragrance free and natural soaps, these are the best kind to use, as they tend to be far more gentle on the skin. Secondly, ensure that when you wash your hands, you are not using too much soap - a small amount to create a small lather is perfect.

You should use the small amount of soap and wash with warm (not hot!) water for at least 20 seconds, this is enough time to ensure that bacteria and nasties are washed away. Once you've done this, it's best to dry your hands with kitchen roll that can be thrown away, to ensure that no bacteria is being stored in a towel and then used by someone else.

Once you've done this, you should apply a moisturiser immediately to keep the hands from drying out.

Are there any ingredients people should stay away from to avoid dry skin?

  • Products that contain heavy fragrance can cause dry and sensitive skin.
  • Creams and ointments are better than thick lotions.
  • Hand sanitizers with too much alcohol can be drying to chapped skin
